About Faro / Acerca Faro:

Faro is in the Algarve District of southern Portugal. Its southern edge is made up of the Parke Natural del Ria Formosa. This sizeable system of lagoons and islands stretches for 60km along the Algarve coastline from west of Faro to Cacela Velha. It encloses a vast area of marsh, salinas salt pans, creeks and dune islands. The marshes are an important area for migrating and nesting birds. You can see a huge variety of wading birds here, along with ducks, shorebirds, gulls and terns. This is the favoured nesting place of the little tern and the rare purple gallinule. Faro is on the western edge of the Bay of Cadiz on the Atlantic ocean. 


Faro is primarily a beach town, quite quite and peaceful in the winter. There is a small walled old city and an interesting commercial center. While there are many nice restaurants and bars, there are signs of a bad economy taking its toll on the area. One can take boat tour into the Parke Reserve and so bird watching. It is a relaxing place to spend several days. There are many stunning places along the coastline as well as excellent beaches such as Albufeira whuch are easy day trips from Faro. Fara, being a coastal town also offers a very exciting nightlife.

Faro se encuentra en el distrito de Algarve, en el sur de Portugal. Su extremo sur se compone del Parke Natural del Ria Formosa. Este sistema considerable de lagunas e islas se extiende por 60 kilometros a lo largo de la costa del Algarve desde el oeste de Faro a Cacela Velha. Encierra una amplia zona de marismas, salinas Salinas, arroyos e islas de dunas. Los pantanos son un área importante para la migración de las aves y anidan. Se puede ver una gran variedad de aves zancudas aquí, junto con los patos, las aves playeras, gaviotas y charranes. Este es el lugar de anidación favorecida de la pequeña golondrina de mar y el calamón rara. Faro se encuentra en el borde occidental de la Bahía de Cádiz en el océano Atlántico.

Faro es principalmente un pueblo de playa, muy tranquilo y silencioso en el invierno. Hay una pequeña ciudad amurallada y un centro comercial interesante. Si bien hay muchos restaurantes y bares, hay signos de una mala economía que toman su peaje en la zona. Uno puede tomar paseo en barco a la Reserva Parke y así la observación de aves. Es un lugar relajante para pasar varios días. Hay muchos lugares impresionantes a lo largo de la costa, así como excelentes playas como Albufeira whuch son excursiones de un día de Faro. Fara, al ser una ciudad costera también ofrece una vida nocturna muy emocionante.

Pedestrian Shopping/Eating Area:  

When you go into the old town (from the Marina) there is a nicely laid out pedestrian area (no cars allowed). Lots of shops, both well known (and sometimes axpensive) brands as well as shops with local products. Also many restaurants, pastelarias and bars to have a rest and drink.

Cuando uno entra en el casco antiguo (de la Marina) hay una zona peatonal muy bien diseñada (no se permiten coches). Un montón de tiendas, tanto conocidos (y, a veces costosos) marcas, así como tiendas con productos locales. También muchos restaurantes, bares y pastelarias para descansar y beber. Me gustan los pavimentos de mosaico decorativo uno camina en - pez, una rosa de los vientos, diseños geométricos - por lo distintivamente portugués.

La laguna de Ria Formosa: 
Part of the Parke Natural. The Ria Formosa lagoon, located in the Algarve, in southern Portugal, is a system of barrier islands that communicates with the sea through six inlets. Five of these inlets are natural and have mobility characteristics. The sixth is an artificial inlet that was opened with the purpose of allowing easier access to the port of Faro. Presently the main inlet of the system is the Faro-Olhão inlet, which was artificially opened. The process started in 1927 but only in 1952 were the engineering works completed and it assumed the present configuration. Within the Ria Formosa system, different and sometimes antagonistic uses may be found. Part of the system is a Natural Park but Ria Formosa also plays an important role in the region's economy. Beyond the tourist use the system also supports other economic activities like seafood farms 

La laguna de Ria Formosa: Parte del Parke Natural. La laguna de Ria Formosa, situado en el Algarve, en el sur de Portugal, es un sistema de islas de barrera que se comunica con el mar a través de seis entradas. Cinco de estas entradas son naturales y tienen características de movilidad. La sexta es una entrada artificial que se abrió con el fin de permitir un acceso más fácil al puerto de Faro. Actualmente la entrada principal del sistema es la entrada de Faro-Olhão, que fue abierta artificialmente. El proceso se inició en 1927, pero sólo en 1952 fueron las obras de ingeniería completados y que supone la configuración actual. Dentro del sistema de Ria Formosa, usos diferentes y, a veces antagónicos pueden ser encontrados. Parte del sistema es un parque natural de Ria Formosa, pero también juega un papel importante en la economía de la región. Más allá del uso turístico del sistema también es compatible con otras actividades económicas como las granjas de mariscos

Old Town Faro:

In Old town Faro, within walls are a number of exquisite buildings, many dating from the city’s prosperous flowering in the 16th century, such as the chapel of Nossa Senhora do Repouso. The walls themselves date originally from Roman times, and ruins of these original walls remain, but most of the fortifications that you see today date from the 16th century. The cathedral is older, with origins in the medieval period following Christianity’s resurgence, following a period of Muslim rule, in the mid-13th century. The cathedral has suffered various forms of damage, notably from an earthquake in 1755, and over the centuries has been rebuilt and repaired many times – it now displays a variety of influences and styles, from Gothic touches to 17th century tiling and gold leaf embellishment. You can climb the bell tower for excellent views over the city and Atlantic coast. There is a lowely walk outside the walls alonf the Ria Fomosa.

En el casco antiguo de Faro, dentro de las paredes hay una serie de edificios, muchos exquisitos que data de la floración próspera de la ciudad en el siglo 16, como la capilla de Nossa Senhora do Repouso. Las paredes propios fecha originaria de la época romana, y las ruinas de estas paredes originales permanecen, pero la mayoría de las fortificaciones que se ven en la actualidad datan del siglo 16. Dining / Comida:

For the most part I ate petiscos and drank wine in the outdoor cafes. I fif eat at this place, had great service, good food, and it was primarily locals. It was off the beaten path.

En su mayor parte Comí y bebí petiscos vino en los cafés al aire libre. Me FIF comer en este lugar, tenía un gran servicio, buena comida, y era principalmente locales. Era fuera de lo común.

General Observations  /  Observaciones generales:
For the most part, Faro is a laid back beach town. Lots of different types of restaurants and bars, a lot of shopping. There was a much higher degree of begging and homeless here than anywhere else in Spain or Portugal. I got the feeling that the economy is particularly distressed here. But the, it is a beach town and it was winter.

En su mayor parte, Faro es un pueblo de playa relajado. Un montón de diferentes tipos de restaurantes y bares, una gran cantidad de tiendas. Hubo un grado mucho más alto de la mendicidad y sin hogar aquí que en cualquier otro lugar en España y Portugal. Me dio la impresión de que la economía es particularmente angustiado aquí. Pero el, es un pueblo de playa y era invierno.

This was one of the most wonderful hostels I have stayed in. It is a general youth hostel but the staff and the guests were a lot of fun. This place was fulled with 20 somethings yet they treated this 66 year old guy like one of the gang. The bathroom were very clean and sufficient. The decor was shappby chic. The public areas were large and entertining. Each bed had its own mini lamp, power source and small shelf for phone, etc. There is a nice large kitchen with a great breakfast and all get together in the evening tomake group dinners.

Esto fue no de los más maravillosos albergues que he estado. Es un albergue juvenil en general, pero el personal y los huéspedes eran un montón de diversión. Este lugar se llenó con 20 tantos sin embargo, trató este chico de 66 años como uno más del grupo. El baño era muy limpia y suficiente. La decoración estaba en mal estado chic. Las zonas públicas donde grandes y entretenidos. Cada cama tiene su propio mini lámpara, fuente de alimentación y el pequeño estante para el teléfono, etc. Hay una cocina grande y bonita con un gran desayuno y todos se reúnen en la noche para hacer cenas de grupo.

Language / Idioma:
Portuguese in Portugal is quite distinct from that of Brazil. I am able to understand much of what Brazilians say, however, not so much from the Portuguese. Everyone speaks perfect English and very strong Spanish. There is absolutely no trouble communicating if you speak English or Spanish.
