Salamanca:

Salamanca is located in northwestern Spain and is the capital of the Province of Salamanca in the community of Castile and León. Its Old City was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1988. , Salamanca is the second most populated urban area in Castile and León, It is one of the most important university cities in Spain and supplies 16% of Spain's market for the teaching of the Spanish language. Salamanca attracts thousands of international students, generating a diverse environment in and around the city. It is situated approximately 80 km (50 mi) east of the Portuguese border. The city was founded in the pre-Ancient Rome period by the Vaccaei, a Celtic tribe. With the fall of the Carthaginians to the Romans, the city of Helmantica, as it was known, began to take more importance as a commercial hub in the Roman Hispania due to its favorable location. Salamanca lay on a Roman road, known as the Vía de la Plata, which connected it with Emerita Augusta (present day Mérida) to the south Its Roman bridge dates from the 1st century, and was a part of this road.

Salamanca is known as the “Golden City,” it is an architectural masterpiece, built with a very specific type of blond sandstone found only in the deep quarries in the region of Castile-León. The stone in its pure form is a combination of creams and caramel colors that shine gold in the sunlight. After centuries of oxidation and exposure to the elements, though, the high-iron sandstones are deteriorating, giving the buildings and facades of Salamanca a distinctive reddish patina that dominates the aesthetic of the city. 

Salamanca se encuentra en el noroeste de España y es la capital de la provincia de Salamanca, en la comunidad de Castilla y León. Su casco antiguo fue declarado Patrimonio de la Humanidad en 1988., Salamanca es la segunda área urbana más poblada de Castilla y León, es una de las ciudades universitarias más importantes de España y suministra el 16% del mercado de España para la enseñanza de la Lengua española. Salamanca atrae a miles de estudiantes internacionales, generando un ambiente diverso en y alrededor de la ciudad. Está situado a unos 80 km (50 millas) al este de la frontera con Portugal. La ciudad fue fundada en el periodo pre-antigua Roma por el Vacca, una tribu celta. University of Salamanca / Universidad de Salamanca:

The University of Salamanca, which was founded in 1134, is the oldest university in Spain and the fourth oldest western university.  but the first to be given its status by the Pope Alexander IV who gave universal validity to its degrees. One of the most important moments in Salamanca's history was the year 1218, when Alfonso IX of León granted a royal charter to the University of Salamanca, although formal teaching had existed at least since 1130. Soon it became one of the most significant and prestigious academic centres in Europe. It has 30,000 students, the university is, together with tourism, a dominant force in Salamanca.

La Universidad de Salamanca, que fue fundada en 1134, es la universidad más antigua de España y la Universidad de Western cuarta más antigua. pero el primero en darse su estatus por el Papa Alejandro IV, que dio validez universal de sus grados. Salamanca Cathedral / Catedral Salamanca:

The New Cathedral of Salamanca is unique in that it was built aside the Old Cathedral and they share a wall. The building began at a time when the gothic style was becoming less popular and was merging with the new Renaissance style, giving the resulting Plateresco style in Spain. However, this cathedral retained more of its Gothic character because the authorities wanted the new cathedral to blend with the old one. During the 18th century, two elements were added that broke with the showy form with the predominant style of the building: a Baroque cupola on the transept and the final stages of the bell tower (92 m). This fusion gives the building a unique look as compared to other cathedrals of the time. The cathedral dominates from up a rise that makes it even more impressive when viewing from down on the old Roman bridge.

La Catedral Nueva de Salamanca es único, ya que fue construido a un lado de la catedral vieja y comparten una pared. El edificio se inició en un momento en el estilo gótico fue cada vez menos popular y fue fusionando con el nuevo estilo renacentista, dando el estilo plateresco resultando en España. Sin embargo, esta catedral retuvo más de su carácter gótico porque las autoridades querían que la nueva catedral para mezclarse con el antiguo. Durante el siglo 18, se añadieron dos elementos que rompió con la forma llamativa con el estilo predominante del edificio: una cúpula barroca en el crucero y las etapas finales de la torre del campanario (92 m). Getting Around / Moverse Por:

Salamanca has two bus stations and no real train service. I arrived at one bus station and walked about 25 minutes to my hostel in old town. I departed from the other, and again, a walk of less then 30 minutes. I did not have the occasion to take any form of transit in the city, so sorry, no help there.

Salamanca cuenta con dos estaciones de autobuses y hay servicio de tren real. Llegué a una estación de autobuses y caminamos unos 25 minutos a mi hostal en el casco antiguo. Partí de la otra, y otra vez, un paseo de menos de 30 minutos. No he tenido la ocasión de tomar cualquier forma de transporte en la ciudad, lo siento, no hay ayuda allí.

Dining / Comida:

I did not have any outstanding dining experience in Salamanca. Typical tapas fare available. The only thing of note, I was happy to be able to find a nice coffee shop that made the sort of strong drip coffee I like, and where I could sit and read and talk with students.  

I did enjoy some of the tapas at the Erasmus Home Cafe.

Yo no tenía ninguna experiencia culinaria excepcional en Salamanca. tapas típicas de tarifas disponibles. La única cosa de la nota, yo estaba feliz de ser capaz de encontrar una cafetería agradable que hizo que el tipo de café fuerte goteo me gusta, y en el que podía sentarse y leer y hablar con los estudiantes.

General Observations  /  Observaciones generales:

Salamanca is a university town, which to me makes it young and vibrant. It was easier to chat up strangers here than in other parts of Spain.It is quite international. It is easy to get around, and the old city is compact, so no need for transit.

Salamanca es una estopa de la universidad, que me hace que sea joven y vibrante. Era más fácil ligar con desconocidos aquí que en otras partes de Spain.It es bastante internacional. Es fácil de recorrer, y la ciudad vieja es compacto, por lo que no hay necesidad para el tránsito.

Hostel:

Erasmus Home Hostel Salamanca

The location is excellent. The bed, bedding, bathrooms were all more than satisfactory. There is a nice community area and an outdoor terrace. I shared with several somehow connected with the University and enjoyed my roommates with conversation. Quiet and both nights I slept very well. Free breakfast at Erasmus Cafe, just a few blocks away. I would definitely return there in the future.

La ubicación es excelente. La cama, ropa de cama, baños eran más que satisfactorio. Hay una bonita zona comunitaria y una terraza exterior. Compartí con varios conectada de alguna manera con la Universidad y disfruté de mis compañeros con la conversación. Tranquilo y las dos noches que dormí muy bien. Desayuno gratis en el Erasmus Cafe, a sólo unas cuadras de distancia. Sin duda, volvería allí en el futuro.

San Sebastian/Donostia:

San Sebastián  French: Saint-Sébastien) or Donostia in Basque is a coastal city and municipality located in the Basque Autonomous Community, Spain. It lies on the coast of the Bay of Biscay and is 20 km from the French border. It is the Capital city of Gipuzkoa, and has a  population of just under 200,000. Monte Urguell with its Castillo San Sebastian juts out into the Bay forming two beautiful cresent moon shaped beaches. It is one of the most popular tourist spots in Spain.It reminds me of some of the cities along the Italian Riviera. It is quite compact and easy to get around. This was one of my favorite places in Spain.

San Sebastián francés: Saint-Sébastien) o Donostia en euskera es una ciudad costera y un municipio situado en la Comunidad Autónoma del País Vasco, España. Se encuentra en la costa del Golfo de Vizcaya y se encuentra a 20 km de la frontera francesa. Es la capital de Gipuzkoa, y tiene una población de poco menos de 200.000. Monte Urguell con su Castillo de San Sebastián se adentra en la bahía que forma dos playas hermosas en forma de luna creciente. Es uno de los puntos turísticos más populares en Spain.It me recuerda a algunas de las ciudades a lo largo de la Riviera italiana. Es muy compacto y fácil de recorrer. Este fue uno de mis lugares favoritos en España.


Old Town / Pueblo Viejo:

The most visited place in San Sebastian is the Old Town. It lies at the foot of Mount Urgull, protected by the sea on one side and the River Urumea on the other. Delving into the Old Town shows you the real social centre of San Sebastián; its streets are crammed full of bars offering the best pintxos in the city and its beautiful buildings like the Basilica of St Mary of the Chorus and St Vincent's Church. The Plaza de la Constitución is the most famous square in the Gipuzkoa capital and also lies in this part of San Sebastián. It is brimming with life.

El lugar más visitado en San Sebastián es la ciudad vieja. Se encuentra a los pies del monte Urgull, protegido por el mar en un lado y el río Urumea por el otro. Profundizando en el casco antiguo que muestra el verdadero centro social de San Sebastián; sus calles están repletas llena de bares que ofrecen los mejores pintxos de la ciudad y sus bellos edificios como la basílica de Santa María del Coro y la Iglesia de San Vicente. La Plaza de la Constitución es la plaza más famosa de la capital guipuzcoana y también se encuentra en esta parte de San Sebastián. Está lleno de vida.


Getting Around / Moverse por 

San Sebastian is very compact. It s also a beautiful walking city. I never took any sort of public transit unless it was coming into or leaving the city.

San Sebastián es muy compacto. Es también una hermosa ciudad a pie. Nunca tomé ningún tipo de transporte público a menos que fuera que entra o sale de la ciudad.

Dining / Comida:

The food in Basque country is heaven for me. I love a cocktail with a little snack, then an hour later start again. Here it is not tapas, rather Pinxtos. A pintxo is a small snack, typically eaten in bars, traditional in northern Spain and especially popular in the Basque country and Navarre. A pinxto bar is covered with scores of different types of pinxtos and you just point to the ones you want, and keep coming back for more.They are usually eaten in bars or taverns as a small snack while hanging out with friends or relatives; thus, they have a strong socializing component, and in the Basque country and Navarre they are usually regarded as a cornerstone of local culture and society. They are related to tapas, the main difference being that pinchos are usually 'spiked' with a skewer or toothpick, often to a piece of bread. They are served in individual portions and you settle up with the bartender when ready to leave, always on the honor system.

Drinks are beer ( caña,  caña doble or a jarra) vinto tinto  (a generous serving for $2-2.50), vermouth (on the rocks with a fruit garnish), Txakoli (a clean white wine, high in acid, and has a great deal of minerality and salinity, making it perfectly refreshing to sip with seafood, cured meats, and hard cheeses)




A word about my favorite restaurant bar in Spain. It is maybe 12 feet wide and 100 feet deep, totally stand up, always packed, La Mejillonera. Plates of mussels served five different ways. A plate of 10 mussels, your choise of sauce and a caña of beer will set you back $4.

Some of my other favorite pinxtos are the Gilda, which is anchovies, hot green mini peppers and olives on a skewer, veal cheeks which is braised veal cheeks in a rich gravy and a few papas bravas, anchovy bocadillos, smoked thin sliced cod on a crispy fresh slice of baguette, and bowls of mixed spanish olives.

La comida en el País Vasco es el cielo para mí. Me encanta un cóctel con un pequeño aperitivo, a continuación, una hora más tarde a empezar de nuevo. Aquí no es tapas, en lugar de Pintxos. Tolosa:

Tolosa is a small city about an hour south of San Sebastian by train. It has a charming old city, and a wonderful Saturday market in a glass and open structure overlooking the river. I bought a loaf of delicious bread and some cheese to keep at the hostel. It was good to get away from the tourist type areas and be in a rather bucholic setting. It was a quick trip, but worth the time. The former capital of Gipuzkoa was an important passage for traders that linked up Navarre with ports of the Bay of Biscay. For centuries it benefited from numerous privileges. From that glorious past Tolosa inherited a valuable historical old quarter marked by buildings and monuments of different styles. 

Tolosa es una ciudad pequeña cerca de una hora al sur de San Sebastián en tren. Tiene un casco antiguo encantador, y un maravilloso mercado sábado en una estructura de vidrio y abierta con vistas al río. He comprado una hogaza de pan delicioso y un poco de queso para mantener en el albergue. Fue bueno alejarse de las zonas turísticas de tipo y estar en un entorno bucólico lugar. Fue un viaje rápido, pero vale la pena el tiempo. La antigua capital de Gipuzkoa fue un paso importante para los comerciantes que unía a Navarra con los puertos del Golfo de Vizcaya. Durante siglos se ha beneficiado de numerosos privilegios. A partir de ese glorioso pasado Tolosa heredó un valioso casco antiguo histórico marcado por edificios y monumentos de diferentes estilos.

Hondarriba:

Hondarribia (Basque: Hondarribia; Spanish: Fuenterrabía; French: Fontarrabie) is a town situated on the west shore of Bidasoa river's mouth, in Gipuzkoa, Basque Country, Spain.

The border town with France is sited on a little promontory facing Hendaye (France) over the Txingudi bay. A service boat makes the trip between the two cities. The town holds an ancient old quarter with walls and a castle. Which is quire special. It also has an old fishing village where the tall houses are painted in the same bright colors as the hulls of the fisherman's boat. It is also the place that served my very best meal, Danontzat. I had a beautifully poached whole fish with boiled potatoes, green bean and a whole bottle of wine for $15. Facebook link: Danontzat Restaurant

Hondarribia (Vasco: Hondarribia; español: Fuenterrabía; Francés: Fontarrabie) es una ciudad situada en la costa oeste de la boca del río Bidasoa, en Gipuzkoa, País Vasco, España.

La ciudad de la frontera con Francia está situada en un pequeño promontorio frente Hendaya (Francia) sobre la bahía de Txingudi. Un barco de servicio hace que el viaje entre las dos ciudades. La ciudad lleva a cabo un antiguo casco antiguo con paredes y un castillo. Que es mano de papel especial. Burgos:

Burgos was once the capital of the Crown of Castile, and the Burgos Laws or Leyes de Burgos which first governed the behaviour of Spaniards towards the natives of the Americas were promulgated here in 1512.It has many historic landmarks, of particular importance; the Cathedral of Burgos (declared World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1984. The Museum of Human Evolution was opened in 2010, unique in its kind across the world and projected to become one of the top 10 most-visited museums in Spain. The museum features the first Europeans, which lived in this area 800,000 years ago. It also has one of the nicest tapas bard I was able to visit. Burgos was named gastronomy capital of Spain in 2013. I would not make a special effort to visit, but I was very impressed with the museum.

Burgos fue la capital de la Corona de Castilla, y las Leyes de Burgos o Leyes de Burgos, que rige en primer lugar el comportamiento de los españoles hacia los indígenas de las Américas se promulgaron aquí en 1512.It tiene muchos lugares de interés histórico, de particular importancia; la catedral de Burgos (declarado Patrimonio de la Humanidad por la UNESCO en 1984. General Observations  /  Observaciones generales:

The Basque people seem to tryly enjoy life and socializing. The pinxtos bars are all overflowing into the streets with people drinking, laughing, and having a little bite to eat. I was surprised at the amount of high end clothing and jewelry stores, and the level of very well dressed people on the streets. The people also appear to be very proud of their heritage.

El pueblo vasco parecen disfrutar realmente de la vida y la socialización. Las barras de pintxos están desbordando a las calles con la gente beber, reír, y que tiene un pequeño bocado para comer. Me sorprendió la cantidad de ropa y joyas tiendas de alto nivel, y el nivel de personas muy bien vestidas en las calles. Las personas también parecen estar muy orgulloso de su herencia.

Hostel:

A Room In the City

This was what I would consider an upscale hostel at a downscale price. The location was excellent between Old Town and the train station. It is in a very safe area. It has 24 hour reception. The beds are AMAZING. Not bunks, great mattresses and bedding. Wonderful modern and clean bathrooms. A beautiful kitchen area upstairs with free snacks, coffee and tea at all times. The staff could not be more helpful, and the owner Estefania spent a lot of time with me giving recommendations on day trips in the San Sebastian area as well as other parts of Spain.

Esto era lo que yo consideraría un hostal exclusivo a un precio inferior de la escala. La ubicación era excelente, entre el casco antiguo y la estación de tren. Se encuentra en una zona muy segura. Cuenta con recepción 24 horas. Las camas son increíbles. Cuadernos, excelentes colchones y ropa de cama. baños modernos y limpios maravillosos. Una hermosa zona de la cocina de arriba con aperitivos, café y té en todo momento. El personal no podía ser más servicial, y el propietario Estefania pasado mucho tiempo conmigo dando recomendaciones sobre excursiones de un día en la zona de San Sebastián, así como otras partes de España.

Language Basque / Idioma Vasco:
Basque is an entirely different language, seemingly eastern European in nature. Nothing like Spanish or Catalan. One can hear on the streets, it is the language locals use with each other. However, not to worry, they also speak quite perfect English, Spanish and French.

Vasco es un lenguaje completamente diferente, al parecer el este deEuropa en la naturaleza. No hay nada como el español o catalán.Uno puede oír en las calles, es el lenguaje de los locales usan entre sí. Sin embargo, no hay que preocuparse, sino que también parecen ser del todo perfecto Inglés, Francés y Español.

Gaudi's Park Guell:



For me Gaudi sites were the most amazing parts of Barcelone. Don't get me wrong, I loved the city, but after experiencing the rest of Spain, Barcelona tends to be more of a nice large urban city. While there are several Gaudi sites, I will discuss just Park Güell and Sagrada Familia. I was here in the low season and both spots necessitated my buying a ticket for the next day. So, buy on line in advance.

Para mí los sitios de Gaudí fueron las partes más impresionantes de Barcelona. No me malinterpreten, me encantó la ciudad, pero después de experimentar el resto de España, Barcelona tiende a ser más de un bonito gran ciudad urbana. Si bien hay varios sitios de Gaudí, simplemente voy a discutir Parque Güell y la Sagrada Familia. • Park Güell. PercPark Guellhed atop Barcelona high on a hill, the Park was originally land owned by a wealthy Barcelona family, the Güell's. The senior Güell wanted to build a Park/Estate development for other like families. For reasons I am not fully aware, the residential aspect fell through and Gaudi was commissioned to carry plans through as a park. The grounds are amazing and I spent nearly an entire day wantering. The Park is truly like walking through a wonderland dream.

Gaudi's Sagrada Familia

One cannot visit Barcelona without touring this Gaudi designed Basilica. It has been under construction since 1882 and will be completerd in 2020. Imagine that, a project tat spans three centuries. The admission is steep but as long as you are there, pay the 17 Euros.

Transport in Barcelona is magnificent. I took a bus from the airport as it dropped me at Plaza Catalunya, less than a kilometer from my hostel. I took the metro bak to the train station. Each was was less than $10. I bought a transit pass for $10 and ended up using only $5 of it in my five days there, but I am a walker. Barcelona is a great walking city, and most things are quite close, but then I have no problem with walking 15-20 kilometers per day. I would judge the busses, Metro, and the city in general to be extremely safe.

Transporte en Barcelona es magnífica. Tomé un autobús desde el aeropuerto, ya que me dejó en Plaza Cataluña, a menos de un kilómetro de mi hostal. Tomé el metro bak a la terminal internacional. Neighborhoods, Sites / Barrios, Sitios:

El Born. My favorite Barrio! DA settlement built on top of a medieval area of jousts and celebrations El Born has grown into being one of the most fashionable places in the city. Every day the cafes are packed and at night people move along to Passeig de Born, which according to locals was the site of the jousts, to sample the many bars, which serve up a mean mojito. There is plenty of culture to be had as well. It can be seen that Calle Montcada was also a medieval street, which is now home to the Picasso museum and the Textile Museum which has a lovely café with a terrace attached to it. The textile museum is located here because in Born's early days it was home to the textile guilds of Barcelona.

El Born. Mi Barrio preferido! DA asentamiento construido encima de una zona medieval de justas y celebraciones El Born se ha convertido en uno de los lugares más de moda en la ciudad. Cada día los cafés se embalan y en la noche la gente mueven a lo largo del Paseo de Born, que según los lugareños fue el escenario de las justas, a la muestra de los numerosos bares, que sirven un buen mojito. Hay un montón de cultura que se tenía también. Se puede observar que la calle Montcada también era una calle medieval, que es ahora el hogar del museo Picasso y el Museo Textil, que tiene una magnífica cafetería con una terraza que se le atribuye. El museo textil se encuentra aquí porque en los primeros días de Born era el hogar de los gremios textiles de Barcelona.

The Gothic Quarter (Barri Gòtic)

While a mix of quit a bit of modern with the old, the narrow street create quite a labyrinth and means that it may take a while to get your bearings. I recommend that you should always look up and around you or you may miss some of the best bits.

El Revel

I loved this neighborhood, very interesting, probably more suitable for seasoned travellers. Raval is an interesting and exciting area in Barcelona however it also has its darker and seedy side that you ought to be aware of. It is certainly not the safest or the cleanest area in Barcelona but it does have a special personality and character all of its own that makes this area a compelling visit.

Me encantó este barrio, muy interesante, probablemente más adecuado para viajeros experimentados. Raval es un área interesante y emocionante en Barcelona sin embargo, también tiene su lado oscuro y sórdido que usted debe tener en cuenta. Ciertamente, no es el más seguro o el área más limpia en Barcelona pero tiene una personalidad especial y el carácter de todos los suyos que hace de esta zona una visita convincente.

I found the food in Barcelona to be wonderful when I first arrived, but as I travelled Spain, it, along with Madrid, became my least favorite. I think it has more to do with the fact of more indoor dining and less casual outdoor dining. The products in the markets were displayed beautifully. I was amazed at the diversity of selections in meats, fish, poultry, vegetables and fruits. Prices were higher in Barcelona than elsewhere. Again, I think it due to more indoor dining and less street cafe tapas.

General Observations

Having just come from London, it was very noticeable the people of Barcelona are far more polite than Londoners. But, they are also more polite than Cuencans and generally Ecuadoreans. And, I need not even mention the general level of civility in the US. As seems to be in all of Spain at all times of the year, people love to go out walking. The streets are full of strollers until quite late at night. There is very little trafic tieupsin Barcelone. The streets are quite grand and drivers can make their right hand turns at a red, then wait at the pedestrian crosswalks further down without a wait at the red light.

Tras haber llegado de Londres, fue muy notable la gente de Barcelona son mucho más educados que los londinenses. Sin embargo, también son más cortés que Cuencans y en general los ecuatorianos. Y, necesito ni siquiera mencionar el nivel general de la civilidad en los EE.UU.. Como parece ser en toda España en todas las épocas del año, la gente le encanta salir a caminar. Las calles están llenas de sillas de paseo hasta muy tarde en la noche. Hay muy poco UPS empate de tráfico en Barcelona. Las calles son bastante grandes y los conductores pueden hacer que su mano derecha se convierte en un rojo, y luego esperar a los pasos de peatones más abajo sin tener que esperar en la luz roja.

I was unable to buy a sim/data card my first night in Barcelona as it was after 9:00 Sunday night and Moviestar was the only place open. Vonage is the top carrier in Spain and had much better deals. For $15 I was able to purchase sufficient data to last me the entire month in Spain, and I really used my smart phone for everything. I would definitely recommend Vonage, even though the process took close to an hour as the lines were long. Transmission speeds were excellent throughout Spain, and I was even able to video skype around the world when I wanted to. This sim card must be bought from a Vonage official store, which happen to be ubiquitous.

Hostels:

I stayed at two different hostels in Barcelona as I added two night to my plans and the first was booked for the additional nights.

Black Swan Hostel

This was my first hostel and I felt that for $9 per night it was wonderful. Location good, clean facilities, nice kitchen with a free simple breakfast. The only problen was the lights. Each bed did NOT have a mini lamp, so folks were coming and going all night and turning on the overhead lights. Also, the steel lockers were being opened all night lone. But the people were generally nice. Guests were  primarily young Asians.

360 Hostel Barcelona

This place was right around the corner from the first and had a very nice vibe. The public areas were large and friendly. The rooms were much quiter and each bed had a mini lamp and nearby elictrical socket. They also did laundry for a very minimal fee. The bathrooms were older, but clean.

They also have a room upstrairs with lots of desktops, and strong wifi. Free tea or coffee all hours day and night.

Language Catalan / catalán / catalá

Catalan if quite different from Spanish; however not so much that one cannot get be. And anyway, everyone speaks English and Spanish in any case. Here are some hints from a site, and I have also given their link below:

• Written Spanish is wholly phonetic while Catalan is not: This means that when you read, each letter you see has an accompanying sound. English, for example is not phonetic. Why? Bekuz.
• Catalan shares the ‘L’ of Portuguese: Spanish speakers have trouble with this L, which exists in the Portuguese word for ‘woman’, for example: mulher. In English, the closest sound is the ‘L’-ish sound you make in the word million.
• Final consonants are often silent: Like in Portuguese, the final ‘r’ of an infinitive verb is dropped. Also, in other cases such as “Ara fant,” which is pronounced “ara fan”.
• In Spanish, there is no ‘z’ sound, but in Catalan there is: Often this sound, like in English, is represented by an s.
• Catalan uses consonant clusters where Spanish does not: ‘ts’ ‘ks’ ‘gts’ ‘ls’ are consonant clusters, among others. Spanish requires a vowel sound between consonant sounds most of the time.
• Catalan employs linkage: The pronunciation of Catalan words can change depending on the syntactical context in which a word appears. For instance, ‘fins aviat’ (see you soon) creates that ‘z’ sound between the words, because the Catalan speaker links them. English does this, but Spanish does not (even though really fast speakers sometimes make it seem otherwise).
• Catalan has stress-marked vowels that change: Spanish has stress on vowels, but Catalan is more complicated. At least in this part of Catalonia, if one vowel is stressed in a word with several others, those others have different sounds. For example, the word “teléfon” in Catalan has one stressed vowel (marked by the accent) and two unstressed vowels. When the ‘e’ is not stressed, in Barcelona it is pronounced ‘uh’. The unstressed ‘o’ is pronounced ‘u’ or ‘ooo’. Tuh-lay-foon.
